The first radio station established by a school in South Asia, FM Royal, continues to advance its legacy with the development of yet another distinguished broadcasting platform. As a reflection of the achievements of Royal College students in the field of radio broadcasting, FM Royal has successfully conducted 22 broadcasts since its inception.
Notable milestones include serving as the official radio station for the South Asian Games in 1995 and initiating live coverage of the Bradby Shield Encounter in 2000. The station has also been a pioneer in introducing innovative broadcasting technologies within Sri Lanka. In 2005, FM Royal launched its 'Web Cast,' Sri Lanka's first 24-hour Internet stream replicating a traditional FM broadcast. The following year, it introduced the FM Royal Podcast, which became Sri Lanka's first service of its kind.
In 2014, FM Royal expanded its reach globally through the FM Royal application and began broadcasting in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle. Moving forward, the Media Unit and Radio Club of Royal College continue to collaborate with the broader Media Unit to uphold and enhance FM Royal’s legacy through innovative and improved broadcasting initiatives.
